Our Community Science Commitment

Community Science brings scientists and communities together to solve local challenges. -Eos.org

At Brooklyn Independent, we strive to continuously help and impact the NYC community. One way we have been working on environmental impact is through our Community Science program with the Billion Oyster Project.

DID YOU KNOW? Oysters act as a natural water filter and can help clean NYC waterways!

Through this project, our students are able to apply both their content knowledge about oysters and ecosystems, and implement hands-on science techniques using the caliper and water quality testing kits. The students work to make sense of this data through graph plotting and trend identification. Through a closely aligned curriculum, we will be diving into the impacts of clean waterways and how clean water is both an environmental and social justice issue.

Stay tuned!
